Overpowering Hopelessness...

The last few weeks have damaged my soul, perhaps irreparably. Every newsflash on TV, every online news post, every facebook status has been a blow, first bruising my optimism, then incising through it until all that is left is a gaping hole with every ounce of hope spurting out of it. Nothing seems to heal it. Its like you're being sucked into the quicksand of despair, and every effort you make to cling onto any shred of optimism seems to suck you in even deeper. How low have we stooped as a nation. First the rampart terrorism, then the ruthless murder of minorities, blowing up houses of worship, lynching innocent boys, corrupt politicians and now they've snatched the last bit of optimism from the nation. Pakistani cricket, perhaps breathed its last today. I just feel sick to the guts. Is there any hope left now? You wonder if there are any honest good people left anymore? Or are they practically extinct? Is morality and honesty a forgotten virtue now? I try to find hope from the most trivial of things. Yesterday it was the joy of finding a mosque for Jummah in a small English town. This morning, it was the expectation of a youthful Pakistani team making the nation proud. Now, its nothing.

Its not that I loved cricket that much or the fact that the cricketing scandal hit me so hard. Its just that perhaps cricket represented the collective hope and optimism of people who were drowning in this constant daily deluge of death and despair. It united us, gave us hope and was something to make us smile. when nothing else worked. Now, it turns out that it was a facade as well, hiding the evil face of deceit, corruption and greed. They betrayed us. All of us. The few remaining simple, optimistic, hopeful ones amongst us. Its like in a dark, dingy, suffocating room, cricket represented a crack in the wall from which fresh air and light managed to reach us. Now, with that gone, we're all left to suffocate in the darkness of despair.

Its a dog eat dog world out there. I was always an idealist. Always in the false delusion that perhaps ideals and virtue reign supreme, atleast, in the end. I don't know what to believe in anymore. I love my country, even though I've practically lived half my life overseas by now. Yet I love it to bits, the kind of love that can make you teary eyed and think about it before sleeping. I'm always the one defending Pakistan whenever one of my friends or acquaintances or random strangers badmouth it. I can't do that anymore. It's like somebody has knocked you in the stomach so many times that it has sucked the air out of you and before you get the last knockout punch, you just give up and fall to avoid further pain and humiliation. Living in a foreign land, your ONLY identity is your country. People identify you as a Pakistani. And every time something like this happens, you hang your head in shame and act defensive, claiming that it's just a few mad people, a few greedy people, a few corrupt people. How long can you realistically keep doing that? Sooner or later empirical evidence would suggest that instead of a few random occurrences, it is infact a deep-rooted, systematic and idealogical phenomenon that is enshrined within the mentality of the people, that it is some incurable malaise that plagues our hearts, minds and souls. I've given up on the inherent goodness of people. All the good people (who are an endangered species) end up being used, abused, and thrown to the dogs. I don't know what to say anymore. Its like another flood has submerged my brain. The  deluge of hopelessness and depression. Perhaps, I need to take a break from the world wide web; the blogs, the depressing facebook statuses, the television news channels and the online newspapers. Perhaps, ignorance really is bliss in this crazy world.

I'm heartbroken. There is a big void in my soul now. In a small corner of that void is a tombstone reading: RIP HOPE. (1985-2010).

Rumi on co-existence...

Poetry...

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed---and gazed---but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Longing by Matthew Arnold...

Longing

Come to me in my dreams, and then
By day I shall be well again!
For so the night will more than pay
The hopeless longing of the day.

Come, as thou cam'st a thousand times,
A messenger from radiant climes,
And smile on thy new world, and be
As kind to others as to me!

Or, as thou never cam'st in sooth,
Come now, and let me dream it truth,
And part my hair, and kiss my brow,
And say, My love why sufferest thou?

Come to me in my dreams, and then
By day I shall be well again!
For so the night will more than pay
The hopeless longing of the day.

Anjaana Anjaani - Aas Pass Khuda (Unplugged)

Latest song by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan from the movie anjaana anjaani...It fits well with my earlier post, especially the lyrics: "jhuk jain sar jahan waheen milta rab ka raasta"...There are two versions...take your pick ^_^

Lyrics (I love the lyrics):

Dhundhla jaayein jo manzilein
Ik pal ko tu nazar jhuka
Jhuk jaaye sar jahan wahi
Milta hai rab ka raasta
Teri kismat tu badal de
Rakh himmat bus chal de
Tere saathi mere kadmon ke hain nishaan
Tu na jaane aas pass hai khuda - 6 times

Khud pe daal tu nazar
Haalaton se haar kar
Kahan chala re
Haath ki lakeer ko
Modhta marodta
Hai hausla re
Toh khud tere khwabon ke rang mein
Tu apne jahan ko bhi rang de
Ke chalta hoon mein tere sang mein
Ho shaam bhi toh kya
Jab hoga andhera
Tab paayega dar mera
Uss dar pe phir hogi teri subah
Tu na jaane aas pass hai khuda - 4 times

Mitt jaate hain sabke nishaan
Bas ek woh mitt ta nahin hai haye
Maan le jo har mushkil ko marzi meri haye
Ho humsafar na tera jab koi
Tu ho jahan rahunga mein wahi
Tujhse kabhi na ik pal bhi mein judaa
Tu na jaane aas pass hai khuda - 8 times

You are the Reason....

You are the dawn of every day to me
the hope that sees me through
the light that guides the way for me,
the love that's always true.

You are the joy that fills the heart of me,
the dreams I'm dreaming of,
you'll always be a part of me,
you'll always be my love.

You are the reason for my tommorrows
you are the reason for today,
you are the reason for my lifes living,
you are the reason my life's complete.

You are the joy I have come to know,
the comfort I depend on,
you are the friend I share my dreams with,
you are the reason.

Praying Jummah in Khuda ki basti...

These days I'm on a public sector client in a mid-sized town called Stoke-on-trent...Its kinda sorta like Isloo in the sence that it has inclined roads and lots of greenery, plus it seems small and peaceful with a sizeable Asian and non-white population...As it was Jummah today, I googled for nearby mosques and surprisingly found that there were 5-6 mosques in the city..I went to the nearest one...It just feels so nice to find a house of worship in the least unexpected of places in pardes...Moreover, the most heartening thing was the fact that even in this so called Godless land the mosque was filled, from top to bottom (it had two floors)...There were actually people who greeted me, a total stranger with salaam. This only happens in Pakistan if you know someone. The best thing however, was the fact that everyone, arabs, indians, pakistanis, turks, afghanis, africans prayed together amicably behind the imam without any prejudice, without any distinction. That was truly inspiring. At that point, no one asked you whether you were sunni, shia, aga khani, ahmedi, barailvi, deobandi, ahl-e-sunnat, ahl-e-hadeeth and what not...Everyone bowed down and prostrated in unison...In that very mosque, in that very community (which I now call khuda ki basti), I experienced an environment of brotherhood and camradrie which should be the hall mark of human society in general and Muslim society in particular...I wish and pray that my fellow Pakistani countrymen can look past their differences and instead focus on the 99% commonalities that their sects/schools of thought have, the most significant of which is prostrating in unison before the Lord of all Mankind. We should learn to co-exist and pay heed to the injunction of the Holy Quran that there is no compulsion in religion. We should stop judging others piety and instead focus on making ourselves model muslims. Verily, God will adjudge our intentions, actions and faith on the Day of Judgement. We should leave all judgements and convictions to Him. I believe this would go a long long way in getting us out of our current predicaments...

Flood relief and facebooking...

Some of my friends are actively involved in going to the flood affected areas and providing relief goods + assistance to the affectees. However, I find one thing really irritating. Why oh why would they blow their own trumpet by updating their statuses while doing the relief work or why would they upload videos and/or photographs. It just seems to be blatant show-offing. I discussed this with a friend and he argued that perhaps they want to highlight the plight of the people or encourage/inspire others to volunteer as well, that if they can do it, so can others. However, if you look closely most of these videos seem to be joyrides in boats or helicopters. I don't know. Perhaps I've become more cynical but I know as a muslim, all our good deeds should be for the love of God and His creation. They shouldn't be a means of exhibiting ones' piety or goodness. One should always be humble. In urdu, there is a word called "dekhawa" which roughly translates to doing something to impress and or please others. If one does anything for the sake of dekhawa, its reward is diminished or invalidated. Anyhow, I guess actions should be judged by intentions and the best Judge is up there. I leave it to Him

You Learn...

After a while you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul,

And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning
And company doesn't mean security.

And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts
And presents aren't promises,
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes open
With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child,
And you learn to build all your roads on today
Because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans
And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.
After a while you learn...
That even sunshine burns if you get too much.
So you plant your garden and decorate your own soul,
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure...
That you really are strong
And you really do have worth...
And you learn and learn...
With every good-bye you learn.

Seems to be a new patriotic song...

Mushy song of the day....

Lyrics
You are the air I need to breathe
the river of life inside of me
you are the half that made me whole
you are the anchor of my soul
and you are strong when I am weak
you are the words when I can't speak
you never fail to see me through
that's the love I found in you
you are my shelter from the storm
you are the road that leads me home
and baby with you here face to face
Oh I know I've found my place
and you are strong when I am weak
you are the words when I can't speak
you never fail to see me through
that's the love I found in you
and once in every life
you find the one that's right
and when you say forever it's true
That's the love I found in you
You are strong when I am weak
you are the words when I can't speak
you never fail to see me through
That's the love I found in you
That's the love, love I found in you

Soulmate...

A soulmate is someone who has the locks

to fit our keys, and the keys to fit our

locks. When we feel safe enough to open

the locks, our truest selves step out and

we can be completely and honestly who we

are; we can be loved for who we are and

not for who we're pretending to be.

Each of us unveils the best part of one

another. No matter what else goes wrong

around us, with that one person we're safe

in our paradise. Our soulmate is someone

who shares our deepest longings, our sense

of direction. When we're two balloons, and

together our direction is up, chances are

we've found the right person. Our soulmate

is the one who makes life come to life.

Love Sonnet IX

There where the waves shatter on the restless rocks
the clear light bursts and enacts its rose,
and the sea-circle shrinks to a cluster of buds,
to one drop of blue salt, falling.

O bright magnolia bursting in the foam,
magnetic transient whose death blooms
and vanishes--being, nothingness--forever:
broken salt, dazzling lurch of the sea.

You & I, Love, together we ratify the silence,
while the sea destroys its perpetual statues,
collapses its towers of wild speed and whiteness:

because in the weavings of those invisible fabrics,
galloping water, incessant sand,
we make the only permanent tenderness.
~Pablo Neruda
