Tips for studying during Ramadan...

Studying during the month of fasting is a really challenging task. But if you've got exams after Ramadan or soon after Ramadan, then you don't have a choice other than to roll-up your sleeves, shout out the confusing pangs of hunger, thirst, drowsiness and the resulting utter total lack of focus. However, tension not. There is no need for doom and gloom. If you're a bit flexible and disciplined, you can still study reasonably efficiently.

The first tip is to divide your time sensibly. From experience, I can say with assurity that the 2-3 hours just before roza and the 1-2 hours after roza are almost impossible to study in. In the first instance, the level of hunger reaches a point where you can't focus on anything. In the later instance, the sudden infusion of food just makes you drowsy. So, you can use these times to catch up on your sleep.

Some people are creatures of the night. For them studying at night is the most feasible time. They can simply take some caffeine and study non-stop till sehri and then sleep for most of the day waking up between zuhr and asr to complete a second stint of studying. However for those of you who don't wake up through the night an ideal time to study is to have loads of caffeine during sehri and then start studying from that time till midday. By midday, hunger starts to build up and that time should be used for question practice and applied stuff rather than trying to learn and absorb new concepts.

Also, it is imperative that you eat fully in sehri, otherwise it might get really difficult during the day. Desi's tend to eat really oily food and parathas in sehri which just makes you feel thirsty within a few hours, espcially if you sleep after sehri. So, try some cool stuff having a youghurt base, something cerealish, milky, sawayyan or I remember a certain desi version called pherriyaan...ermm also don't forget milk and honey. It is reputed to have very potent positive factors which improve concentration and performance...in studying :P

Don't forget that this month is about our spiritual uplift as well. So, use the time to plead God to help you during the exam preparation, to make you focus and to enable you to pass the examination and reach your desired target.  Ask Allah SWT from the bottom of your heart. the prayers that are done from the core of the hearts shake the heavens. Other than that, learn to relax and shurg of the stress. Its only another exam, not the end of the world. All you can do is work hard and leave the rest to Him. Stressing harms no one besides yourself and trust me there are many many other things that you can stress out on and exams are quite low in that list.

I hope these tips are useful. Best of luck for the exams and may Allah (SWT) make your studies easier and convenient and help you reach the heights of academic and professional excellence that you so deserve. Inshallah- Ameen!
