Asthma...

Ahh asthma...Such a curse it is...Wouldn't even wish it on my worst enemy...An ever present threat: Shackled lungs, wheezing, laboured breathing, sinking, drowning feeling, coughs and what not; things that an asthmatic has to live by...It is definitely a liability compounded by the fact that I'm far too casual when it comes to remembering to take my inhaler with me...

In a way, asthma brings you closer to God...We take each heartbeat, each breath for granted...When you're having asthma everything kinda sorts slows down and in that slow motion you can feel each breath, each heartbeat and be much more grateful for them when the asthma subsides...My roomate in uni used to joke and sing the song for asthma: Sanson Ki Mala Pe Simroon Main Pi Ka Naam... I found these poems and I think its easy for an asthamatic to relate to them

Awakened to a dreadful burden;
The weight of air within my lungs.
Eyes all hollow with the mourning,
Breathless is the hourly song.

Shining brightly pulls a trigger;
Away thou cursed rays of light!
You desire oh so badly,
To drag me screaming into night.

Through tears of agonising pain,
A cry of fear cannot be loosed.
The beat of life a rapid flutter,
My breathe an ever tightened noose.

Performed without thinking
each breath that we take
Is taken for granted
with nothing at stake

 Unless you have asthma
and then all things change
Where thinking of each breath
is not really strange

 For there are those times
when your throat becomes tightened
You try to relax
and not get so frightened

That you add to the panic
and worsen your plight
As your breathing gets shallow
and ever so slight

 It is literally choking
to death in slow motion
You reach for medication
or some sort of potion

 That will restore your breathing
and make everything right
But sometimes this choking
will go on through the night
You will sit upright counting
as the minutes go by
Taking each wheezing breath
as you look toward the sky

 Sending up a quick prayer
as you stare at the light
Asking God to just let you
get through this long night

 And when the attack passes
and normal breathing returns
Your chest still feels sore
and your lung tissue burns

Like the cuts of a fighter
that take time to heal
Knowing that sometime soon
he’ll repeat this ordeal

 So asthma continues
in your life without end
A permanent resident
an unwelcomed friend.
